Functional Strategies for Weight Loss with Hypothyroidism with Dr. Joni Labbe

Weight loss isn't just about eating less. It's about understanding what's driving your metabolism in the first place.

That's one of the biggest shifts I've seen in the conversation around weight loss over the past few years. For decades, many women with hypothyroidism were told that if they simply ate less and exercised more, the weight would come off. But if you've lived with hypothyroidism or Hashimoto's for any length of time, you know it often isn't that simple.

More recently, GLP-1 medications like Ozempic have changed the conversation. They've helped many people lose weight, but they've also sparked important questions about appetite, blood sugar, gut health, inflammation, and the many factors that influence metabolism. What else can we learn from this new understanding? And what other strategies might support a healthy metabolism (whether or not GLP-1 medications are part of your journey)?

That's exactly what I explored in my latest conversation with functional nutritionist and thyroid specialist Dr. Joni LabbeDr. Labbe is a board-certified clinical nutritionist, functional health practitioner, and thyroid specialist who works with women experiencing hypothyroidism, Hashimoto's, hormone imbalances, gut dysfunction, and stubborn weight loss resistance.

We didn't spend our time debating whether GLP-1 medications are "good" or "bad." Instead, we explored what this new era of obesity medicine has taught us about metabolism, and what we can do to support those same underlying systems naturally. We discussed the bigger picture of metabolic health, from gut health and blood sugar regulation to sleep, nervous system balance, inflammation, and the role food plays in supporting each of those systems.

Throughout our conversation, we explored emerging research on topics like gut health, Akkermansia, butyrate, berberine, saffron, hydrogen-rich water, sleep, and nervous system regulation. But the biggest takeaway was the reminder that our metabolism is influenced by many interconnected factors, and that supporting our thyroid, gut health, and metabolism starts with understanding the bigger picture.

What You'll Learn In This Episode

Cracking the thyroid weight loss code isn't just about eating less and exercising more. It's about recognizing that metabolism is complex, especially when hypothyroidism or Hashimoto's are involved. As Dr. Labbe shares in this conversation, the more we understand what's happening beneath the surface, the more opportunities we have to support our health in meaningful ways.

In this episode, Dr. Labbe and I discuss:

  • Why weight loss with hypothyroidism is often more about biology than willpower
  • What GLP-1 medications have taught us about appetite, metabolism, and "food noise"
  • How gut health may influence blood sugar, inflammation, and weight regulation
  • Why bacteria like Akkermansia and compounds like butyrate are getting so much attention
  • The roles that berberine, saffron, and hydrogen-rich water may play in supporting metabolic health
  • Why food should always be the foundation—and supplements the support
  • How sleep, stress, and nervous system regulation can influence cravings, energy, and weight loss
  • Why positive self-talk and self-compassion may be just as important as the food on your plate

As Dr. Labbe pointed out, failure to lose weight with hypothyroidism or Hashimoto's is not a character flaw or proof that you're lazy or lacking willpower. It's often a sign that something deeper is influencing your metabolism. Inflammation, blood sugar regulation, gut health, sleep, hormones, stress, and thyroid function all interact in ways we're only beginning to understand.

Gut Health: One Piece of the Metabolic Puzzle

One of the most interesting parts of my conversation with Dr. Labbe was how often we came back to the gut. Research continues to reveal just how connected our digestive system is to nearly every aspect of our health, including metabolism.

We talked about Akkermansia, a beneficial gut bacterium that has received a lot of attention in recent years because of its potential role in supporting the gut lining, insulin sensitivity, and metabolic health. We also discussed butyrate, a short-chain fatty acid produced when our gut bacteria ferment certain fibers and resistant starches. Butyrate serves as an important fuel source for the cells lining the colon and plays a role in maintaining a healthy gut environment.

While supplements for both Akkermansia and butyrate are now available, one of the things I appreciated about this conversation was that it naturally came back to food. Dr. Labbe emphasized that these compounds don't exist in isolation. They're part of a much larger ecosystem that responds to the foods we eat day after day.

Whether we're talking about colorful vegetables, resistant starches, fermented foods, herbs and spices, or high-quality proteins and healthy fats, our daily food choices create the environment that allows our gut microbiome to thrive. Supplements may have a place, but they work best when they're supporting an already solid foundation—not replacing one.

I appreciated that Dr. Labbe repeatedly brought the conversation back to food, even while discussing supplements. She shared that she often recommends The THYROID30® Cookbook to her clients as a practical way to put these principles into action. That meant a great deal to me because helping women translate nutrition science into everyday meals is exactly why I wrote it. đź’›

Final Thoughts

If there's one thing I hope you take away from this conversation, it's that there probably isn't one magic supplement or medication that explains weight struggles with hypothyroidism. Our metabolism is influenced by a remarkable network of factors, including our thyroid, gut, blood sugar, sleep, stress, inflammation, and daily food choices. The encouraging news is that every one of those areas gives us another opportunity to support our health.

I hope this conversation with Dr. Joni Labbe leaves you feeling informed, encouraged, and reminded that there are many paths to better health. Whether you're exploring GLP-1 medications, focusing on food first, or simply looking for answers to stubborn weight loss resistance, you deserve an approach that looks at the whole picture—not just the number on the scale.
