If you have hypothyroidism or Hashimoto’s, there’s a good chance your skin has gotten the memo.

Maybe it feels tight and dry no matter how much lotion you use. Maybe your heels crack and your shins flake all winter. Or maybe it’s bigger than that. Hives that show up out of nowhere. A rash that won’t quit. An eczema or psoriasis flare that keeps you up all night and uncomfy all day.

For something that affects so many Thyroid Thrivers, skin doesn’t get enough airtime in the thyroid world. We talk a lot about fatigue, weight, and brain fog. But the thyroid-skin connection is real, and skin symptoms can make an invisible illness like hypothyroidism or Hashimoto’s suddenly visible. They can affect your comfort, your sleep, your ability to work or socialize, and sometimes whether you want to go out in public at all. In other words, they can be debilitating. And if the answer you keep hearing is “here’s another cream” or “here’s another food to cut,” that gets old fast.

That’s why I invited clinical nutritionist Jennifer Fugo, MS, LDN, CNS, onto Episode 105 of Thyroid-Healthy Bites. Jennifer is the founder of Skinterrupt and host of the Healthy Skin Show, and she knows this territory firsthand. Her own eczema was once so severe that washing her hair hurt. Today, she specializes in helping people get to the root of chronic skin issues like eczema, psoriasis, and chronic hives.

In our conversation, we dig into the thyroid-skin connection, what Jennifer calls “histamine overload,” why ever-shrinking food lists aren’t the answer, and a simple way to moisturize dry, itchy skin so it stays hydrated. We also talk about something near and dear to my heart: treating your body as a partner, not an enemy.

What You’ll Learn in This Episode

Skin symptoms can be uncomfortable, confusing, and deeply personal. Jennifer’s approach is to look at the whole picture, including your health history all the way back to childhood. She works from a matrix of 16 potential root causes, such as thyroid function, gut health, liver detox, nutrient deficiencies, hormones, environmental triggers, and stress. Most of her clients have somewhere between three and six, so no two plans look the same.

In this episode, Jennifer and I discuss:

  • How hypothyroidism and Hashimoto’s can show up in your skin, from dryness and cracking to psoriasis
  • The link between autoimmune thyroid disease, eczema, and chronic hives
  • Histamine overload vs. histamine intolerance
  • Surprising hive triggers like heat, sunlight, and clothing
  • When elimination diets help, and when they go too far
  • The difference between a food allergy and a food sensitivity
  • Why oil alone won’t hydrate dry skin, and what to do instead
  • The nutrients Jennifer uses with clients for skin and liver detox support
  • Treating your body as a partner, not an enemy

How Your Thyroid Shows Up in Your Skin

Jennifer discusses how low thyroid function can contribute to dry, itchy skin that may crack, as well as the overlap between autoimmune thyroid disease and conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, and chronic hives.

She shared the story of a client with severe psoriasis whose TSH came back at 33. Once her thyroid was treated, her psoriasis eased, and her mood and energy turned around within weeks.

Jennifer’s takeaway: if you have a chronic skin condition, ask your doctor for a full thyroid panel. And if you already have a thyroid condition, make sure your provider knows about your skin condition, too.

Hives, Histamine, and Shrinking Food Lists

Jennifer compares histamine overload to a cup that’s already close to full. Food is one possible contributor, but so are heat, sunlight, pressure from clothing, and stress. When the cup spills over, hives show up.

That’s why she looks beyond a list of high-histamine foods. Many of her clients arrive after years of cutting foods, some down to the same five foods every day, and still flaring. Jennifer calls it “shrinking diet syndrome,” and her goal is always to expand the diet, not shrink it further.

As a chef, I loved this part of the conversation. Food is nourishment, and it’s also pleasure, culture, and connection. While dietary changes may help ease symptoms or provide clues about what’s driving them, long-term elimination of foods is rarely a root-cause solution.

Dry, Itchy Skin: Where to Start

Jennifer’s first tip: oil can’t hydrate your skin, because hydration means water. Apply a good moisturizer right after you shower, while your skin is still a little damp. If you need more protection, add an oil or balm on top to seal it in.

She also talks about the nutrients she uses clinically, including glycine, vitamin B6, and L-histidine. Listen to the episode for the details, and check with your provider before adding anything new. That goes double for B6, which can be toxic in excess.

Final Thoughts

If your skin has been giving you a hard time, I hope this conversation helps you feel less alone and gives you some good questions to bring to your healthcare team.

One of Jennifer’s messages rang true for us as Thyroid Thrivers: your body isn’t betraying you. It’s asking for help. That shift may not make the itch disappear, but it can help you approach your next steps with more curiosity and compassion.

Cheering you on,
