Why Other Approaches Often Miss the Mark

If you’ve spent any time in the thyroid health world, you already know how overwhelming it can be.

One expert says to avoid a food. Another says that same food is a superfood. One approach promises fast results. Another says you’ll never heal unless you follow a long list of strict rules, or certain supplements, or expensive programs. It’s enough to make your head spin.

Many Thyroid Thrivers find themselves trying hard to “do all the right things” and still feeling tired, inflamed, confused, or stuck.

When people find their way to me, they’re often already in a state of overwhelm and burnout. I rarely see a lack of effort being the problem. What I see far more often are women who are already tired, already restricted, already trying so hard… and still not feeling better.

They’ve done elimination diets.
They’ve cut more and more foods.
They’ve followed long lists of supplements and “rules.”
They’ve tried hard to be perfect and disciplined.

And instead of feeling more supported, many feel more anxious, more discouraged, and more disconnected from their bodies than ever. 

For Thyroid Thrivers, healing doesn’t happen in a body that feels unsafe, pressured, or constantly on edge. It happens when the nervous system feels supported — when the approach is grounded, gentle, and sustainable.

Chronic calorie restriction, rigid dietary rules, food fear, and information overload can quietly keep the nervous system in a constant state of stress. And a stressed nervous system doesn’t heal well. It doesn’t digest well. It doesn’t regulate hormones well.

Restriction doesn’t equal results, especially in the long term. Neither does perfection. or willpower, or better self-discipline.

Consistency does.

For me and many in the Thrivers Club Community who have been using THYROID30 since it was first created in 2017, it has become a way of life. One that helps us stay active, feel more productive at work, play with our kids and grandkids, enjoy travel and adventures, and navigate the ups and downs that life with hypothyroidism and Hashimoto’s can bring.

At the foundation of THYROID30 are what I call the 8 Daily Rituals of Thyroid-Healthy Living — the 8 Rs. These are simple, common-sense practices rooted in what leading thyroid and functional medicine experts consistently recommend for the management and prevention of chronic illness. The 8 Rs bring them together into one tidy, digestible framework you can actually apply in daily life.

The 8 Rs are not complicated, but they are powerful. When practiced consistently, they create the steady, sustainable support that makes a lasting difference for Thyroid Thrivers.

Here’s a quick tour of the 8 Rs: 

  1. Remember to take your daily medications and supplements.
  2. Refuel with the food and drink your body thrives on.
  3. Reactivate by moving your body regularly.
  4. Repair and care for your gut health.
  5. Rejuvenate with daily self-care and stress management practices.
  6. Reduce and avoid exposure to toxins.
  7. Relish the journey, your wins, and your support system.
  8. Recharge by prioritizing sleep and sleep hygiene.

Together, these daily rituals create the backbone of THYROID30. They give you a simple way to track your habits, build awareness, and create a lifestyle that truly supports your health for the long run. 

 

Why I Created THYROID30

THYROID30 wasn’t created because this path was easy for me. It was created because it was hard.

After my hypothyroidism diagnosis, I spent years feeling exhausted, inflamed, and not like myself. I was repeatedly told that food and lifestyle wouldn’t make a difference, and that because my TSH was “normal” my residual hypothyroid symptoms were all in my head. I was left without real answers, support, or a clear roadmap forward.

Sadly, I know this part of my story is not unique. I hear versions of it every day from women in my community. What made my experience unique is that I went through all of this as a chef.

Food has always been my passion. When I finally learned about thyroid-friendly, anti-inflammatory eating, it was deeply empowering. I finally had tools that were actually helping me feel better. At the same time, it came with a massive wave of grief. My career had to change. My relationship with food had to change. What was once a free and creative process now became more about problem-solving. And I was suddenly navigating restrictions I didn’t yet know how to live with.

I stumbled through this figuring-out process alone. I knew I needed support in making these changes successfully,  so I went looking for it, but it didn't exist at the time, at least, not specifically for people like me. 

I didn't need more rules. I needed simplification. I needed a system. I needed support, accountability, and a way of living that felt realistic and even joyful.

I started to wish for something that could bring together the what, the why, and the how of thyroid-friendly food and lifestyle, for me and people like me. 

Then one day, the solution hit me like a lightning bolt. I would build it myself. 

In 2017, with the help of my former business partner and fellow Thyroid Thriver, Danna Bowman, we created THYROID30 — a grounded, compassionate framework that would eventually become the foundation of the Thrivers Club Community and a way of life for thousands of Thyroid Thrivers.

THYROID30 is the support system I wish I had when I was finding my way. And it’s the heart of everything I now share in the THYROID30 Cookbook.
